This side-handle teapot, or "one-handle teapot," is a traditional Japanese clay teapot used for brewing green tea. The pot, called Kyusu because of its shape, is handmade - each piece is unique!
"Tokoname" refers to the oldest of the "Six Old Kilns" in Japan, in which ceramics have been fired since 1100 and which has developed into an important center for ceramic production in Tokoname. The Tokoname side-handle pots made of the finest local iron-containing clay are famous for the first-class taste of the teas that are prepared in them and at the same time the visual delight that is not neglected even with multiple infusions.
The side-handle pot with an internal ceramic sieve is made exclusively for TeeGschwendner by Umehara Hirotaka. The irregular decoration, reminiscent of pine bark, is striking. The embossed stripes give the pot an interesting feel. This pot was fired using reduction firing; the red clay was colored a characteristic black due to the high iron content. The red color of the clay comes to the fore on the upper, finely ground edge of the lid and forms a beautiful contrast to the dark body of the pot.
